Ryan, the Standale community is already alarmed and yelling at local officials because of the number of multi-family units added in the Standale area in recent history and the impact on traffic to LMD. How would you enter that dialogue with the community to educate and inform in order to develop support for concepts like the one you have suggested above?
Hi Dave. I just put up another article about the myths associated with density. Traffic is a big one.
If you'd like to talk more about strategy specific to Standale, I'd love to schedule a time for a call or in-person meeting.
I think City leadership already recognizes the importance of improving connectivity and walkability in the Standale area, but some additional changes are still needed before people start choosing to walk, bike or bus instead of driving everywhere. This is mostly due to the way land uses are separated and every building has its own parking lot out front instead of smaller, shared lots tucked behind buildings.
That said, if more housing isn't permitted in Standale, development will simply leapfrog out to Tallmadge Township and Allendale. We will have the same number of drivers on the road, but they will be simply be spread further and further apart. Most will still be commuting down LMD five days a week.
Loved this!!! Now to try to get more people to better understand these concepts. Thanks for providing some great information I can use as talking points!
That’s our goal, Julie. Let me know how your conversations with local leaders go. If you ever think a new story or data set would be helpful, we’re happy to dig in and do our best.
